Parmeshwar Godrej, wife of industrialist Adi Godrej, was a noted philanthropist and businesswoman. Before her marriage she worked with Air-India as one of the first air-hostesses. After her marriage with Adi Godrej, she got involved in various business activities. Also known for her humanitarian work, she did a lot in combating AIDS in India. Due to charming personality she had long list of friends across various segments of society in India and abroad.
Born in a Sikh family and daughter of an army officer, Parmeshwar was working with Air-India as one of the first air-hostesses when she married Adi Godrej. Parmeshwar was a multifaceted personality and assisted her husband in setting up a series of businesses. She was instrumental in the success of soaps and toiletries business by offering her astute marketing ideas. It was due to her efforts that Cinthol, a relatively small brand compared to the rivals, became a major player in soaps and toiletries segment. A style icon, she was known for hosting memorable get together and parties that included businesspersons, actors and who's who of society. She also designed clothes for Hema Malini on the request of her good friend Feroz Khan for his film Dharmatma (1975). Also a philanthropist she led various campaigns to promote awareness about HIV-Aids. The Heroes Project, launched in 2004 with Hollywood actor Richard Gere and support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative is a glaring example of her concern for the society.
Illness and Death
Suffering from degenerative lung disease, Parmeshwar breathed her last at Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital. She is survived by her husband Adi and three children, daughters Nisa and Tanya Dubash, and son Pirojsha.
